"Did you know the hardware and software used in electronic voting machines (DREs) is considered proprietary and cannot be inspected by outside experts? That means that a small number of people could easily program DREs to flip votes, and the evidence of this crime would be safely locked inside the machines, with no way that anyone (except for the manufacturers) to know with 100% certainty that votes were accurately counted, or even if they were counted at all. And paper trails are only useful if they are actually counted. They often aren’t."

Arkansas Election Officials Baffled by Machines That Flipped Race

"Election officials in Faulkner County, Arkansas, are trying to determine how two voting machines allocated votes cast in one race to an entirely different race that was not even on the electronic ballot. The problem resulted in the wrong candidate being declared the winner in a state House race. Election commissioner Bruce Haggard says he does not understand how the error could have happened. The error occurred on two touch-screen voting machines made by Election Systems & Software, which were the only machines used in Faulkner County's East Cadron B voting precinct. Haggard says the night before the election officials noticed that the electronic ballot on the two machines was missing the State House District 45 race, so officials printed paper ballots to be used just for that race in the precinct. Voters used the machines to cast votes for other races, and cast paper ballots for the District 45 race, but a post-election examination revealed that despite the fact that the electronic ballots on the two machines did not display the District 45 race, the machines recorded votes for that contest. Officials eventually determined that the machines took votes cast in the Cadron Township Constable race and put them in the non-existent District 45 race. Haggard says officials were able to determine where the votes came from because the machines produced a voter-verifiable paper audit trail, which correctly showed that there was no District 45 race on the ballot and therefore there were no votes cast in that race on the machines. Haggard says he expects ES&S to provide a reason for why the machines distributed the votes incorrectly, and he has asked the secretary of state's office to conduct an examination with ES&S, which Haggard says will likely take place in June."

Sen. McCain, first, thanks for your service to our people and nation.

I believe that America's biggest challenge is the failure to engage in a constructive foreign policy, as opposed to a destructive foreign policy. This has created an economic drain that is clearly unsupportable, and frankly, made America less safe, rather than more safe. We need to change our attitude towards other countries, peoples, religions and thought perspectives, and embrace rather than seek to dominate and destroy them. The strength of our world is in its diversity, and the policy that America is engaged in is one of seeking to render all to follow our "democratic" style of government, which frankly we are still struggling to accomplish.

Another major problem is the faulty technology base we have fostered. Because there has been no holistic analysis of the impact of technology, pollution and depletion of non-renewables is wreaking havoc on the very fabric of the planet. So many species are going extinct and the ecosystem of the planet is in great peril. Like our foreign policy, the blind imposition of our will has run roughshod over the living organism that is the earth and these failed approaches will ultimately be our demise.

Health care is a huge issue. We have gotten that wrong as well. The third leading cause of death is the so-called "health care system" itself. Again the lack of a basic understanding that the human body is a self-correcting system and that provided proper nutrition, clean and natural water and a rational lifestyle, free of technology created pollution, health would naturally follow has led to an undernourished, over-medicated population that is doomed to grow ever sicker and more dependent of the system that is killing it. Cancer and heart disease are completely preventable and that is where the focus should be, not on curing them as those conditions are merely symptoms of the flawed approach to health followed in this country.

So the fundamental problem that America faces is lack of enlightened leadership and the flawed strategy of seeking dominance rather than cooperation, both with the peoples of this world, and the very planet itself.

Real Men...

In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy's challenge to, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,' gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines.

In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)

The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was assigned to the Navy's premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital, as a member of the commander in chief's medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery.

For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House awarded him three letters of commendation.

What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated.

While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/ sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.

Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat the system? Are the patriots the people who actually sacrifice something or those who merely talk about their love of the country?

After leaving the service of his country, the young African-American finished his final year of college, entered the seminary, was ordained as a minister, and eventually became pastor of a large church in one of America's biggest cities.

This man is Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the retiring pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ.

* I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union.
* During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America.

* I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history.
* With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes.

* I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.

McCain on waterboarding: Straight Talk Curve Ball?

— Waterboarding is a form of torture no matter how it is done and should be a prohibited among U.S. military interrogation practices, Republican presidential candidate John McCain said today, taking issue with GOP rival Rudy Giuliani’s recent remarks.

“Anyone who knows what waterboarding is could not be unsure. It is a horrible torture technique used by Pol Pot and being used on Buddhist monks as we speak,” said McCain after a campaign stop at Dordt College here.



“People who have worn the uniform and had the experience know that this is a terrible and odious practice and should never be condoned in the U.S. We are a better nation than that.”

Compare and contrast that stand with what Senator McCain said recently:

- Republican presidential candidate John McCain said President Bush should veto a measure that would bar the CIA from using waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods on terror suspects.

McCain voted against the bill, which would restrict the CIA to using only the 19 interrogation techniques listed in the Army field manual.

His vote was controversial because the manual prohibits waterboarding - a simulated drowning technique that McCain also opposes - yet McCain doesn't want the CIA bound by the manual and its prohibitions...

More "Straight Talk": "I was on the record as saying that they could use additional techniques as long as they were not cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment," McCain said. "So the vote was in keeping with my clear record of saying that they could have additional techniques, but those techniques could not violate" international rules against torture."

So the CIA using waterboarding somehow doesn't qualify as making it "condoned in the U.S."?
